Bishopscourt is one of Cape Town’s quietest and most established suburbs, a run of large garden estates on the wooded eastern slopes of Table Mountain, right beside Kirstenbosch. It is green, private and residential, with the mountain rising straight up behind it.
Bishopscourt lies on the wooded eastern slopes of Table Mountain, tucked between the Southern Suburbs and the Constantia valley, right beside Kirstenbosch. It is one of the oldest and most established addresses in Cape Town, a suburb of large garden estates set behind trees and hedges, with the mountain forest rising straight up behind it.
It is almost purely residential, and famously private. There are no shops and no strip here, just big houses on generous plots, mature gardens, and quiet, leafy streets that see little through-traffic. Where the coastal suburbs are about the view and the beach, Bishopscourt is about space, greenery and calm. It stays cool and shaded in summer, sheltered under old trees and close to the mountain.
Kirstenbosch is the great advantage of staying here. One of the finest botanical gardens in the world sits on the suburb’s edge, with lawns for a picnic, a canopy walkway, summer sunset concerts, and trails that climb from the top of the garden straight up the mountain through Skeleton Gorge and Nursery Ravine. Few city suburbs have anything like it on their doorstep.
It is well connected for somewhere so quiet. Newlands, with its sports grounds and cafes, and the shops at Claremont and Cavendish are minutes away, the Constantia wine estates are a short drive south, and the city centre is about fifteen minutes north. The beaches take a little longer, over or around the mountain, which is the trade for all this green.
Part of the appeal is simply how green and grown-in it is. The gardens are old and established, the streets are lined with mature trees, and the birdlife off the mountain slopes makes itself heard in a way it does not lower down in the city. It is a suburb that rewards slowing down: morning walks under the oaks, long afternoons in the garden, and evenings with little louder than the wind in the trees. For a certain kind of trip, that quiet is the whole point.
The homes are grand and spacious, built for the setting: big gardens, pools, and room to spread out, screened from the road and close to the mountain. Bishopscourt suits families and groups who want a calm, private, green base near the mountain rather than the sea, and who value quiet and space above being in the middle of things.
