Clifton is not one beach but four, tucked beneath the slopes of Lion's Head and divided by great rounded boulders of granite. They are known simply as First, Second, Third and Fourth Beach, and each has a character of its own. Walk down the steps from Victoria Road and the city seems to fall away behind you.
Why Clifton feels different
The beaches face west, straight out over the Atlantic, so the afternoon light is long and golden and the sunsets are the kind that make a whole beach go quiet. Clifton is also known for its shelter: the boulders and the steep slope behind the sand help keep it calmer than more exposed parts of the coast when the south-easter blows.
A word about the water. This is the Atlantic, and it is cold, even in high summer. A quick swim is bracing and wonderful. A long one is for the brave.

Four beaches, four moods
Fourth Beach is the largest of the four and the one most families head for, with room to spread out and rocks to clamber over at either end. The smaller coves between the boulders feel more private, and regulars tend to have a favourite they return to summer after summer. Take a morning to wander between them and find yours.
How to spend the day
- Go early. Parking along Victoria Road fills quickly in summer, and the morning light on the water is worth the early start.
- Travel light. There are plenty of steps between the road and the sand, so bring only what you can carry comfortably: towels, water, sunscreen and a good book.
- Stay for the sunset. Pack a jersey for when the sun drops, then watch the sky turn gold over the ocean.
- Leave only footprints. Take everything home with you and help keep Clifton as beautiful as you found it.
Stay a few steps from the sand
Several of the homes we look after sit on the Clifton slope, close enough that the beach becomes part of the rhythm of your stay: a swim before breakfast, lunch on the terrace, and one more walk down when the light softens.
Our concierge team is happy to help plan your beach days, from a picnic for the sand to a private chef waiting when you come back up the steps. Tell us how you like to spend your days and we will take care of the details.
